Sweden opens Consulate-General in Munich

The Government has decided to open a consulate-general in southern Germany’s largest city, Munich. The aim is to help create higher growth in Sweden, strengthen Swedish competitiveness and increase interest in Sweden as an investment destination. Germany is Sweden’s most important trading partner and the world’s third-largest economy. Southern Germany is the country’s economic and political centre after the capital Berlin.
“A strong Sweden requires a strong international presence. By opening a consulate-general covering the key states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, we are promoting trade, investment and innovation in strategic technologies such as defence, space and artificial intelligence. This is important for the approximately 400 Swedish companies operating in the region and the 7 500 Swedes living there,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard.
Sweden and Germany are like-minded on many issues, and have a broad bilateral strategic innovation partnership that includes defence and space issues as well as cooperation on capital markets.
“Germany is a key partner for Sweden in the EU, NATO and broader Baltic Sea cooperation. Our cooperation is crucial to making Europe safer and more competitive,” Ms Malmer Stenergard adds.

Southern Germany is currently covered by the Embassy of Sweden in Berlin. The region is home to a large number of key players in German basic industry and other business sectors. It is characterised by highly dynamic innovation and entrepreneurship with a focus on strategic sectors such as defence, space, AI and medical technology – areas that are also included in the Swedish-German Strategic Innovation Partnership. The innovation clusters in southern Germany are supported by world-leading companies, research institutions and a dynamic ecosystem for start-ups and scale-ups.
Combined, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg constitute the EU’s fourth largest economy and have 24 million inhabitants. There are some 400 Swedish companies operating in southern Germany and approximately 7 500 Swedes living in the region.
The intention is for the Consulate-General in Munich to be staffed by three employees posted from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, one of whom will be the Consul General, who is also Head of Mission. The opening will be completed by 31 December 2027.
